Peter Eigen spent decades working in the World Bank in Washington DC, South America, and Africa. In 1993 he left the World Bank to realize his long-held idea of fighting corruption. With some friends, a one-room office and a telefphone, he started the non-governmental organisation, Transparency International. Today, TI is a global network with its headquarters in Berlin and some 90 National Chapters and contacts worldwide. TI was one of the moving forces in the creation, in 2002, of the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) of which Peter Eigen serves as Chairman.
